Đó là cách dịch theo kiểu chiết tự của một bài trên báo Tuổi Trẻ (1). Tác giả giải thích rằng “khi tìm tư liệu về Bạch Long Vĩ, chúng tôi biết rằng hòn đảo này còn được gọi bằng cái tên tiếng Anh theo nghĩa không hay là Nightingale (night in gale: ‘đêm đầy bão’)”. Ôi, thật là hài hước!

Tôi nghĩ ai học tiếng Anh cũng biết Nightingale có nghĩa là chim sơn ca. Do đó tên tiếng Anh của đảo Bạch Long Vĩ có nghĩa là đảo Chim Sơn Ca. Đơn giản thế thôi. Không có bão táp gì trong chữ đó cả.

Xin nói thêm là ai từng học về thống kê sinh học sẽ biết đến cái tên Florence Nightingale. Bà xuất thấn là một y tá bên Anh, được xem như là “mẹ đẻ” của ngành y tá, nhưng bà còn là một nhà thống kê học xuất sắc. Bà được ghi nhận là người đi tiên phong trong việc thể hiện dữ liệu định lượng bằng biểu đồ.

Quay lại câu chuyện “nightingale = đêm đầy bão”, nguồn mà tác giả nói là đã khảo sát là trang web Cục văn thư và lưu trữ Nhà nước (archives.gov.vn). Không rõ bài nào trong web này dịch như thế. Mà, ngay cả cách dịch theo kiểu chiết tự cũng sai be bét. Không có ai lại ngớ ngẩn đến độ nói “đêm trong cuồng phong” cả (gale có nghĩa là “gió mạnh” hay “cuồng phong”). Ấy thế mà vẫn có người nguỵ biện rằng cách dịch “đêm đầy bão” là đúng với chữ nightingale!

Chuyện này làm tôi nhớ đến chuyện mấy năm trước khi Hội khoa học kĩ thuật Hà Nội dịch dòng chữ “Cây gạo đại thụ. Trồng năm 1284. Giáp Thân” sang tiếng Anh là “Plant rice university acceptance”.

Trước đó thì có vụ dịch nhạc sang tiếng Anh còn vui hơn nữa. Số là người ta làm một CD như là tặng phẩm cho chương trình 1000 năm Thăng Long, gồm 10 ca khúc nổi tiếng của Việt Nam được chuyển sang tiếng Anh. CD này do nhóm BSP Entertainment (được giới thiệu gồm những thành viên là bác sĩ, nghệ sĩ, sinh viên tại Sài Gòn). Họ dịch bài “Hà Nội mùa này vắng những cơn mưa” như sau:

Hà Nội mùa này vắng những cơn mưa (Hanoi’s this season… absent the rains)

Cái rét đầu đông khăn em hiu hiu gió lạnh (The first cold of winter make your towel’s gently in the wind)

Hoa sữa thôi rơi, em bên tôi một chiều tan lớp (Flower stop falling, you inside me after class)

Đường Cổ Ngư xưa chầm chậm bước ta về (on Co Ngu street in our step slowly return)

Đó là cách dịch từng từ một, chứ không hẳn là chuyển ngữ, và chắc chắn không phải là sáng tác.

Chưa nói đến văn phạm (vì khó nói văn phạm trong chuyển ngữ thơ nhạc), cách dịch trên cực kì vụng về, thể hiện người chuyển ngữ chưa rành tiếng Anh. Chú ý đến câu “Hoa sữa ….” thì người dịch lúng túng nên dùng flower cho … tiện. Nếu không biết đây là một ca khúc được dịch sang tiếng Anh, tôi nghĩ là những câu văn hài hước, nhằm chọc cười người nghe. Tôi nghĩ người nói tiếng Anh sẽ không thể nào hiểu nổi những câu văn bồi (vâng, phải nói là bồi) trên có ý nghĩa gì. Flower stop falling, you inside me after class là cái gì? You inside me. Trời đất ơi!…
